My Romantic 10: Great films for Valentines Day

66

By fayehelen

So, Valentines Day is fast approaching and like many people these days I am pretty much broke. Therefore me and my mister are going to have to settle with a night in. I'm not complaining really, nothing really beats snuggling up on the sofa with a glass of wine and a good film (presuming he doesn't snore all the way through it...) I am still deciding on what film we will be watching but I'm sure it will be one of these romantic 10. (sorry Ash, no car chases, guns or explosions this year!)

The Notebook (2004)

I thought I would get this one in first because I know it was expected. I mean, a top romantic films list without The Notebook just wouldn't happen would it? A simple, but beautiful film, about the kind of everlasting love every girl dreams of.

New Year's Eve
Amazon Price: $3.99
Romantic Comedy
Amazon Price: $1.99
List Price: $14.98
Romantic Comedy [VHS]
Amazon Price: $0.99
List Price: $14.95
Play It Again, Sam: A Romantic Comedy in Three Acts
Amazon Price: $7.00
List Price: $9.95

Dirty Dancing (1987)

A classic. I've watched and rewatched over and over again, but still fall in love with Johnny  (played by the gorgeous Patrick Swaynze) every time. The music, the dancing, the classic quotes 'nobody puts baby in the corner'. A perfect film for Valentines Day (or any other day for that matter).

Titanic (1997)

A story about a working class Irish boy, Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), and upper class English Rose (Kate Winslet), who fall passionately in love during the ill-fated voyage. Brought to screen in 1997 to make the disaster more personal, this masterpiece is truely unforgettable.

Casablanca (1943)

Another classic that had to be mentioned. A film full of true romance starring the beautiful Ingrid Bergman and unforgetable Humphrey Bogart. (my nan fancies him, and I must say I am with her on this one). 'Here's looking at you, kid'.

Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

Probably my favourite film of all time. Reese Witherspoon plays a small town girl who returns home after seven years of living and working in the city. She's back to divorce her teenage love so she can legally marry her rich city guy fiance. As you expect, things don't go according to plan.

Love Actually (2003)

Written and directed by Richard Curtis, Love Actually is a fantastic romcom. It is definately the best of british. Hugh Grant, Kiera Knightly, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Bill Nighly, Rowan Atkinson, Emma Thompson all play major parts, in addition to Joanna Page, Andrew Lincoln and Martine McCutcheon. The film follows the seperate love lives of the characters during the run up to Christmas. As the film progresses, and Christmas day gets closer, the viewer gets to see how the stories are interlinked. I really love this film; the healthy mix of rom and com will ensure your man will too. Watch the youtube clip above to see my favourite scene...

 A Walk To Remember (2002)

A beautiful, honest, touching film that will never leave you. Mandy Moore and Shane West play two teenagers in love who have more than the usual teen troubles on their shoulders. I can't watch it without crying, such a gorgeous film.

Breakfast At Tiffany's (1961)

The beautiful Audrey Hepburn is probably best remembered for this romcom and her part playing the quirky and eccentric New York socialite, Holly Golightly. She falls in love with her neighbour who gets to see the softer, sweeter side to her.The image of her carrying a large cigarette holder is one of, if not the, most iconic images in cinema. A true classic; if you haven't seen it you need to!

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Can men and women ever be just friends? Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal argue this point throughout the film, and well, I know we all know what they conclude...

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is one of the best known stories of all time, focusing on the prejudice between classes and family pride which kept lovers apart in 19th century England. I love period drama and nobody does period better than Kiera Knightly.

However, for Jane Austen fans who have 300minutes to spare, check out the 1995 TV mini series adaption of Pride and Prejudice, starring Jenifer Ehle and Colin Firth. It stays truer to the novel and the attention to detail is excellent. A beautiful adaption; nobody can play Darcy like Firth. He is utterly convincing, acting with his eyes as well as his words.

I have found it hard to pick these 10 as there are so many gorgeous romantic films. Seen the above? Why don't you try, Gone With The Wind (1939), Pretty Woman (1990), Ghost (1990), Sleepless In Seattle (1993), The Holiday (2006), Lost In Translation (2003), or Wall-E (2008). (Yes - I know the last one is an animation about robots, but who said love can just be between humans!)

Have a great, and romantic Valentines. Check out my hubs on his and hers gifts and homemade gifts for some more Valentines Day ideas.

Hey Fayehelen,

I just realized I might watch too many movies. LOL.

Only two or three of all the movies you have mentioned in this article I have not seen. I do remember watching the TV mini series of Pride and Prejudice on PBS years ago. It really was great.

Maybe I will watch Wall-E with my son. He saw it years ago, but I think he would love watching it with his mom.

Thanks for the other suggestions.

As for the few movies I had not seen, which were on your list, well, I will see if Netflix have them.

Thanks for sharing.

Take Care,

N.E.

Hello N.E

Thankyou so much for reading and for commenting. I don't think you have watched too many movies - I don't think that's possible! Plus, I wrote this knowing that most people would have seen quite a few of them! Dirty Dancing, Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany's are such classics really.

Let me know what you think of Wall-E. I'm not usually a fan of cartoon/animated films, but Wall-E is so touching. You and your son are bound to love it!!

Best wishes, fayehelen :)

Hi again, QudsaiP1. Thanks for stopping by. Like I said to N.E, some of them are pretty much classics. I wish I could have like a whole weekend to watch them all. lol. Best wishes.
